The Anatomy of a Salad

Ahhh… there’s nothing like a good summer salad with all the right ingredients.  In my humble opinion, starting with fresh lettuce — a  variety, mind you — is the best way to begin.  My sweet neighbor was kind enough to share some of her fresh-from-the-garden lettuce varieties with me today and that little seed alone started my mind rolling in the words again.

The next ingredient, for me at least, is cheese– good sharp cheddar cheese — because we know that cheese makes everything (well, just about everything ) taste better.  Then add chicken, grilled to perfection with onions and garlic in olive oil !  To top it off, add homemade (and I mean homemade) oil and vinegar dressing– you know, the olive oil-balsamic vinaigrette-seasoned – kind .  Add your favorite drink of choice (mine today happened to be a kind of homemade lemonade) and there you have it…  one of the best salads on the planet–making you feel so much better about yourself and your health and all that good stuff.

As I looked at this delicious meal straight from God’s creation, I thought about the real  ingredients that went into it — a good friendship relationship with my friend and neighbor next door, my awesome husband who loves us enough to go to great lengths to buy good priced meat and cheese for us and stock our freezer (even if it means driving 45 minutes away just to purchase “said meat” in bulk) , the physical ability to put it all together without pain or suffering, and a Father Who graciously created so we could create a plate full of wonderful food.

There is such beauty in the ingredients God put together in His creation  of people and love and relationships and friendships and … food. Was my salad talking??  Does God say His creation will cry out His praises if we don’t??  Hmmm…  Enjoy your weekend and pay attention to your food and what it might be saying to you. 🙂

My kids tease me sometimes that my definition of a situation going well is often described as, "It was 'life-giving' " -- meaning, it may have had some conflicts or uneasy moments or stress but all in all , something about it breathed life into the situation and the people involved...something of the heart was moved in a good direction. I'm all about LIFE ... life with my husband, life with 4 adult children, their spouses and 8 grandchildren (to date, that is :), life in our home and life in a wild adventure we tend to label "ministry". In reality , all of these categories mesh together to make up the "organic me". Relational , redeeming and restoring are some of my favorite words and they give life to my soul as I walk it all out with Jesus Christ, the Giver of all life. Profile Photo by: Melody Martin
